What Makes A Good Handwriting Practice Sentence?
A good practice sentence targets the letters being learned, is short enough to copy neatly, uses familiar words and means something to the child. Four checks:
- Targeted. It contains plenty of the letters or joins the child is working on.
- Short. Long sentences tire the hand and hide the letters you wanted to see.
- Familiar words. Words a child can already spell keep attention on the writing.
- Meaningful. A sentence about a real thing is easier to care about than a list of words.
The DfE writing framework backs a second use. It says dictation is helpful for all children, because it lets them practise the transcription they are taught, and it removes the demand of thinking up their own words. So say the sentence, then write it.
Which Sentences Practise Each Letter Family?

What Are Pangrams, And Which Are Best For Handwriting?
A pangram is a sentence that uses every letter of the alphabet at least once, which makes it a quick way to practise or check all 26 letters. Here are four, each checked for full coverage:
- The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. (a traditional pangram)
- How vexingly quick daft zebras jump. (a traditional pangram)
- Vic and Zak quickly jumped from the six big wet boxes.
- Six quick zebras jump over the wet fence by my lazy dog.
The two original ones use everyday words and no capitals except the first. Choose one and use it every time for a fair check.
How Are Pangrams Used To Check Handwriting?
Copying the same pangram at the start of each half-term gives a fair side-by-side check of letter formation, size and joins over time. Keep the sheets in date order and compare them against the criteria in the handwriting assessment checklist.
Three steps make it work:
- Choose one pangram and keep it for the year.
- Give the same time and the same paper each time.
- Compare formation, size, spacing and joins with the last sample, not with another child.
