Adults can improve their handwriting at any age by fixing one habit at a time and practising for about 10 minutes a day. Pick a goal below, neater print, simple joined handwriting or your child's school style, to get practice sheets and a two-week plan.

Nothing you type leaves your device. Can Adults Improve Their Handwriting?
Yes. Adults improve their handwriting with short, regular practice on the specific habits that make it hard to read. The same methods used with children work for adults: correct start points, even size and spacing, and a relaxed grip. Most adults already know the letters, so the work is changing a few habits, not learning from scratch.
What Makes Adult Handwriting Hard To Read?
Check your writing against the National Handwriting Association's "S factors".
| Factor | Check |
|---|---|
| Sitting | Feet flat, forearm supported, paper tilted |
| Size | Small letters even, tall letters about twice as tall |
| Shape | Round letters closed, a and d not open at the top |
| Spacing | Clear gaps between words |
| Slant | All letters leaning the same way |
| Stringing | Joins that do not change letter shapes |
| Speed | Legible when you write fast |
Pick the one or two that let you down most. See how to teach handwriting for more on the S factors.
How Should Adults Practise Handwriting?
Follow a two-week plan, about 10 minutes a day.
- Warm up, 1 minute. Finger taps and a relaxed shake. See warm-ups.
- Fix one problem, 3 minutes. For example, closing the tops of a, d, g and q.
- Drill letter pairs, 3 minutes. The pairs you use most, such as th, in and er.
- Write a sentence, 2 minutes. The same sentence each day, so you see the change. See practice sentences.
- Free writing, 1 minute. Write anything, keeping the fix.
Change the problem in week two.
Can Adults Learn Joined (Cursive) Handwriting?
Yes. Adults learn a simple joined style in a few weeks by practising the joins in letter pairs before whole words. Start with the two basic joins, diagonal and horizontal, and leave letters unjoined where a join feels awkward. The NHA suggests leaving joins after g, y, j, x and z until later. See the cursive alphabet and handwriting joins.
How Can I Make My Handwriting Neater Quickly?
Five quick fixes:
- Slow down. Speed hides shape problems.
- Keep size even. Small letters the same height.
- Leave a letter's width between words.
- Relax the grip. A tight grip causes wobbly lines. See pencil grip.
- Use lined paper. Lines guide size while you practise. See handwriting lines.
How Can Teachers Improve Their Board Handwriting?
Teachers improve board handwriting by practising the school's letterforms at large size, standing to the side, and using a repeater when a consistent model matters. The DfE writing framework says teachers' own handwriting provides a model of high standards across the curriculum. See modelled handwriting and the Handwriting Repeater.

It depends on the habit. Practise one fix daily and compare the same sentence each week.

No. Start with letter pairs and add whole words once the joins feel natural.
What Pen Is Best For Neat Handwriting?
