What Makes These Handwriting Worksheets Different?

These worksheets are drawn from the same stroke-by-stroke letter data as the Handwriting Repeater, so every model letter is formed the way UK schools teach it. Four things set them apart:

  • Start dots and arrows on the model letters, so children see where each letter begins.
  • UK styles. Print, pre-cursive and cursive, not American models.
  • Year-group lines. Wide lines for younger children, narrower for older ones.
  • A link to the movement. Add a QR code to the sheet and it opens the same words being written in the repeater.

A typed font shows a letter's shape. It does not show where the pencil starts or which way it goes, and those are the two things children need to copy.

Which Kind Of Practice Row Should I Use?

Each row type suits a different point in learning a letter or word. Most sheets work best in the order trace, fade, copy.

Row What the child does Best for
Trace Writes over a model with a start dot and arrow New letters, straight after they have been shown
Fade Writes over a lighter model Building independence
Copy Copies the model from the start of the line Consolidating a letter or word
Blank lines Writes from memory Confident writers and dictation

The DfE writing framework gives a warning worth remembering. It says copying from the board or a book, tracing around dotted letters or practising without supervision "can hinder" children from building a strong mental picture of the movement. So show the movement first, keep tracing short, and stay nearby while children write.

Which Line Size Suits My Year Group?

Younger children need wider lines, and the size usually shrinks as their control improves. The DfE writing framework calls wide-lined paper "essential" in Year 1, and says children should move to narrower lines once they write legibly and easily on wide ones.

Choose the guide by what the child needs to see, not just by age:

Guide What it shows Suits
Four lines Top, middle, base and tail lines Children learning where tall letters stop and tails begin
Three lines Top, middle and base Children who know their zones
Two lines Middle and base Children settling into consistent size
Single line The base line only Children who size letters confidently

Move down a size only when letters sit on the line consistently. See handwriting lines for printable paper and true-scale previews.

How Do I Make Name Tracing Sheets For A Whole Class?

Paste your class list into name mode and the generator makes one tracing sheet per child, all in your school's style.

  1. Turn on name mode and paste one name per line.
  2. Choose the style and row types.
  3. Print the whole set or save it as a single PDF.

Names stay on your device. Nothing is uploaded, and nothing is saved when you close the page.

Can I Make Worksheets For Left-Handed Children?

Yes. The left-handed layout puts the model letters on the right of each row, so a left hand does not cover them. The DfE writing framework notes that about 10% of pupils are left-handed, and that left-handers need their own demonstration and adjustments, including paper slanted to the right. More in left-handed writers.

Which Ready-Made Worksheets Can I Print Now?
